Fail Forward Improvisation Class for Life & Communication Skills

Welcome to the Room Where Mistakes Become Material

Welcome to ‘Fail Forward,’ a unique improv class designed for being human in all its wonderfully imperfect glory. At Vegas Improv Power, we believe in ‘Improv for being a human’ – our classes focus on real-life applications that go far beyond traditional comedy improvisation.

What is the ‘Fail Forward’ Improv Class?

Our ‘Fail Forward’ improv class harnesses the power of learning through failure, helping you build a healthier, more productive relationship with mistakes in a supportive environment. This 6-week Functional Improv® course aims to rewire how you respond to the unexpected, build resilience under pressure, and turn stumbles into stepping stones, all within an encouraging and judgment-free setting.

Reframing Failure as Fuel for Growth

Approximately 31% of Americans fear failure enough that it changes how they behave – what risks they take, what rooms they walk into, what they’re willing to try. That fear doesn’t just cause discomfort; research shows it triggers avoidance, procrastination, and self-handicapping – the habit of withdrawing effort before attempting something so the outcome can never truly count as failure[1]. Our class is built around a counterintuitive truth: the fastest path to growth runs straight through your mistakes. Brain imaging research shows that during improvisation, the brain’s self-criticism center becomes significantly less active while creative centers light up[2] – making the improv stage one of the most effective environments ever designed for retraining your relationship with failure.

What You’ll Learn

Through engaging exercises and games, you’ll enhance crucial communication skills, including active listening, boosting your ability to connect authentically with others both on and off the stage. Our unique Functional Improv® exercises and games are designed to refine your:

  • Resilience and recovery from setbacks
  • Communication abilities
  • Adaptability under pressure
  • Growth mindset and creative problem-solving
  • Listening skills
  • Storytelling abilities
  • Ability to see failure as a gift
  • The power of “Yes, And” applied to mistakes

Improv for Anxiety and Social Skills

Recent research has shown that improv training can significantly reduce discomfort with uncertainty, a common trait of social anxiety and depression[3]. A 10-week improv program across 350 students produced measurable reductions in both social anxiety and uncertainty intolerance – and nearly 70% of participants reported the training helped them in their daily lives outside the class entirely[4]. Whether you’re an introvert looking to boost confidence or someone dealing with anxiety, improv provides a safe environment to practice social interactions and build self-assurance.

Class Structure

During each 2.5-hour session, our experienced instructor will guide you through our latest collection of innovative improv exercises that focus on reframing mistakes and building forward from the unexpected. These activities are specifically curated to facilitate self-discovery, ensemble building, and forge new connections.

Every Fail Forward session follows a deliberate three-part structure designed around what the research calls the conditions for productive failure:

  • Warm-ups built to lower the stakes on mistakes – exercises where the “error” is built into the structure so there’s no way to avoid it. You get comfortable with things not going as planned before anything meaningful is on the line.
  • Scenes – real, unscripted scenes where anything can happen and usually does. The goal isn’t to perform well. It’s to make something out of whatever just happened.
  • Structured debriefs – guided reflection after every set of scenes. This is where learning actually happens. Without it, even a great scene passes through the brain like water through a fist. The combination of exposure, immediate feedback, and guided reflection is exactly the three-condition structure that makes failure teach rather than just sting.

Who is This Class For?

Our class is built for anyone who has ever played it safe – at work, in conversation, in a relationship, in a creative project – because failing felt like too high a price. Whether you’re:

  • A beginner curious about improv
  • An introvert looking to boost confidence
  • Someone who overthinks before they speak (and often doesn’t)
  • A perfectionist whose standards slow them down more than protect them
  • A professional who’s been told to “embrace failure” so many times it’s become meaningless noise
  • Literally anyone looking to simply try something new

You’ll walk away from this class feeling invigorated, inspired, and ready to bring your newfound skills into your everyday life. Research shows that students who approach learning with a growth mindset – the belief that ability is built through effort and experience – learn the equivalent of 33 extra days per academic year compared to peers with a fixed mindset[5]. Fail Forward gives you a structured, supportive room to practice exactly that shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if I’ve never done improv before?

A: No prior experience is necessary for our “Fail Forward” class! We welcome beginners (and pros alike!) and design our exercises to be accessible for all skill levels. In fact, beginners often get the most out of Fail Forward because they arrive without fixed habits about how scenes “should” go, which makes them faster to adapt. Our supportive environment ensures everyone feels comfortable exploring improv at their own pace. Need a little more hand holding? Let us know! Want to know how to kick an exercise up a notch? Let us know that as well!

Q: I’m an introvert. Is this class suitable for me?

A: Absolutely! Many of our students are introverts who find that improv helps them build confidence and social skills in a safe, supportive environment. Our “Improv for being human” approach focuses on personal growth rather than performance, making it ideal for introverts. In Fail Forward specifically, the emphasis isn’t on being quick or funny – it’s on what you do after the stumble. That’s a space where introverts often thrive.

Q: What if I’m an extrovert? Or an experienced improviser?

You’re both welcome as well. In fact, anyone (ages 21+) is welcome! We talk a lot about ensemble in our classes for good reasons. People of all types are necessary parts in making an effective ensemble. There’s a reason you haven’t heard of a baseball team consisting entirely of right fielders!

Q: How is Fail Forward different from your other classes?

A: While all of our classes use Functional Improv® and share the same commitment to life skills over stage skills, each one has a different focus. “Yes, Let’s” is about saying yes and embracing what comes next. “Yes, And” is about building together collaboratively. “Let’s Play” is about rediscovering the power of adult play. “Fail Forward” targets your relationship with mistakes directly – it’s specifically structured around reframing failure as data rather than verdict and building the skill of making something out of whatever just happened.

Q: How can improv help with anxiety?

A: Research has shown that improv can help reduce social anxiety and discomfort with uncertainty. Our exercises encourage spontaneity and help you become more comfortable with unpredictable situations, which can translate to reduced anxiety in daily life. Fail Forward adds an extra layer: by practicing recovery from mistakes in a low-stakes environment, you build confidence that unexpected moments don’t have to derail you.

Q: What’s the difference between Functional Improv® and regular improv classes?

A: Functional Improv® focuses on real-life applications of improv skills. We utilize many of the same exercises and games but have a different focus and debrief. While traditional improv classes often emphasize performance and comedy, our approach prioritizes personal growth, communication skills, and practical tools you can use in your everyday life and work.

Q: How long are the “Fail Forward” classes?

A: Each “Fail Forward” class session is 2.5 hours long, providing ample time for warm-ups, exercises, scenes, and structured debriefs. The full course runs for 6 weeks, allowing for sustained skill development and personal growth. And if you still want more, we often schedule the next successive class for a few weeks after a class ends. Many of our students have so much fun that they take all four classes, becoming a Vegas Improv Power graduate. Finally, if you really want your mind blown, our world record is having a student take 7 different classes with us. It’s not that they forgot what we taught, it’s that improv can be thought of more as an ongoing practice, much like yoga.

Q: Will this class help me in my professional life?

A: Definitely! The skills you’ll develop in our “Fail Forward” class – resilience, adaptability, creative problem-solving, and the ability to recover gracefully from mistakes – are highly valued in the workplace. Many of our students report improved confidence in meetings, better ability to handle unexpected questions, and enhanced leadership skills after taking our classes.

Q: Where are the classes held?

A: Our classes are conveniently located in central Las Vegas, just minutes from the Strip. That generally means Las Vegas Little Theatre or Mom’s Basement theatre, both located near Decatur and Spring Mountain or Sahara. We’re easily accessible for residents from Henderson, North Las Vegas, Summerlin, and have had a resident or three from Boulder City make the trek too.

Q: Do I need to prepare anything for the class?

A: Just bring yourself and an open mind! No materials are necessary, though you may want to bring a snack and some water, a coffee, a soda, or whatever you prefer (just no alcohol) as we don’t have any drinks or snacks to provide. Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement, and be ready to collaborate and have fun!
